RSS Feeds and Blogs

7 08 2008

If you’ve found you way around the internet long enough, chances are you’ve seen an icon similar to the one above [taken from Promote The Progress]. RSS Feeds are key to blogs. They should also be key to computer users such as yourself.

Because of RSS feeds, I no longer need to read newspapers or watch news on TV. Dispite what you may think, yes, I did read newspapers at one time, and, no not just the comics. Like, maybe, many of you, I used to hace a long blogroll [still do] and I used folder in my bookmark toolbar to go through them every day. Then I heard about Google Reader and RSS. Thanks to the combination of the two, I was able to have my blogroll updated [almost] live and all in one spot.

Then I read about NetNewsWire [Mac only, sorry Windows] and my blog reading experience changed forever. NetNewsWire was able to give me my lovely blogs whenever I wanted without having to log into anything. At the time I was using Opera, too, which crashed all the time [I wasn't always this smart] so then I didn’t have to keep logging into Google.

Now, my blogroll is 58 feeds long, completely organized, and absolutely managable due to my favorite feature: NewsGator.

NewsGator isn’t really an actual feature, more than a service that NetNewsWire uses as well as other Feed Readers. My feeds are on a NG server, which my NNW picks up from, and then I can get my feeds everywhere, literally. From the iPhone to any Internet terminal, I can log onto NG and read my feeds just like Google Reader, or I can load up NNW on the iPhone and read them on the go.

RSS and ATOM feeds are the future, and will one day take over newspapers completely. So, stay on top of things.

EXCLAMATION! [iPhone 3G talk]

25 07 2008

Now, I’m not a big fan of stealing posts from Gizmodo or Engadget, but in this case I’m going to make an exception…

There’s an iPhone 2.1 Beta…yes. Now, I’m not one to put beta software onto my beloved iPhone 3G, but I’ve kinda been waiting for this. As you can imagine, as an early adopter I’ve experienced the bugs of the 2.0 software. iGerard would give the example of his loss of SMS alert sounds. Personally, I’ve been losing my GPS every once in a while. Which I find to be a little angering when I’m trying to update my Loopt.

Anyway…the new software is supposed to be giving us better GPS support. Now you can exactly see why I’m excited about it. I’ll be adopting AFTER they launch it, cause I don’t want any more bugs than what I have now.
